Why Piercing Guns Should be Banned
Piercing guns have been used for years in mall and department stores for piercing people of all ages. Today, though, professional body piercers want to see the gun banned. Why?
I talked to a lady (who shall remain nameless) who works in a jewelry boutique at a local mall. She said that she has been doing piercings there now for about 6 months. Her "training" took all of 2 weeks, which consisted of watching others and practicing on a teddy bear. (huh?) Although she claims that in the time she has been piercing she has only gotten one complaint, that does not mean this procedure is entirely safe.

Why Body Art Ought to be Left to the Professionals
D.I.Y. or Do It Yourself is becoming a household phrase. Why pay someone when you can do it yourself? Of course, it’s not just a cost issue, but also a matter of pride! To do something with your own two hands brings a sense of self-worth and satisfaction. DIY book sales have soared in recent years, featuring handyman instructions for everything from small craft projects to building your own home.
Tongue piercing is bad for your health and should be avoided, say dentists.
The practice has become increasingly fashionable in recent years and has been made famous by stars like Scary Spice and the Princess Royal’s daughter Zara Phillips.
But the British Dental Association (BDA) says tongue piercing can cause infections, speech impediments, breathing problems and broken teeth.
Place a mental check mark next to the statement that describes you best:
* You’re sick of that lame single ear piercing you’ve had since sixth grade.
* You just got dumped and want to look more "edgy."
* You’ve spent countless hours with that damn ab roller and are determined to draw attention to your washboard tummy.
Body modification, ie. piercing, scarring, branding, tattooing, etc. have been a part of wo/man’s adventure through his/her sexual history. Although in the past decade or so, body mod has seen a resurgence, for many years, anything beyond ear piercing was simply not acceptable. Hold over from the reign of prudery of Victoria assured society of its place in mediocrity until the sub-cultures busted through the veil of society’s disdainful sniffs once more. (more…)
Body piercing is not a new phenomena. The Bible makes reference to noserings and earrings. In recent years, this ancient art has experienced a revival, and is moving into the mainstream. While pierced ears have long been commonplace, a growing number of people now the pierce noses, navels, nipples, tongues, and even genitalia. What does Halacha have to say about body piercing? (Space limitations preclude discussing other Halachic issues such as honoring parents, concerns about the safety of certain piercing procedures, or a discussion of tattooing, which is specifically prohibited by the Bible).
The Scottish Consumer Council has called for tough new controls on skin piercing.
It says the growing trend for body piercing carries a significant risk of harm and infection.
The Scottish Executive is currently looking at tightening up the regulations.
It is thought there are about 200 skin piercing businesses in Scotland, some run from homes or on a mobile basis.
Body piercing has been blamed for a steep rise in allergies to nickel across the Western world.
Nickel is already the most common cause of contact allergy in several European countries.
Exposure to the metal can cause lifelong sensitivity. Sufferers find many belt buckles, wristwatches, glass frames and jewellery impossible to wear.
Research on the topic of body piercing was conducted by three nurses. They addressed the clinical as well as the social aspects of the subject. It is their conclusion that school nurses should be well informed about piercing because they can present the facts to students in an objective way. They recommend that school nurses organize discussions among students where they will hear pierced students relate positive as well as negative outcomes and Nurses, as most adults, do not like the procedure, but the students are already talking about it and doing it. Instead of using scare tactics which will not work anyway, concrete information, presented before students have an impulse to have piercing done, may empower them to make a more considered choice.
Tattoos, body piercings, and other skin adornments have become quite popular in modern society. These practices date back almost 5,300 years and may be fascinating as a part of many cultural rituals, or as signs of beauty; however, they may lead to problems such as keloids (thick scars), infections, allergies, growths, or permanent holes when people want them removed.
The Five Major Tattoo Types
Traumatic tattoos are caused by the unwanted imbedding of dirt or debris beneath the skin which leaves an area of pigmentation after healing. This commonly occurs in "road rash" after a bicycle or motorcycle accident, or a puncture injury from a pencil known as a "graphite or pencil-point" tattoo.
Amateur tattoos are placed by the people themselves, or by their friends, and often show very little artistry or detail. The most common method involves placing India ink beneath the skin with a pin. Pen ink, charcoal, or ashes are also used as the pigment.
